One of the objectives of the education system is for students to develop their research capacity. For this reason, it is proposed that students present their own project when they finish an academic stage. If you have studied at the university, you should already know that completing the Final Degree Project (TFG) and the Final Master’s Project (TFM) is mandatory to obtain the degree. In spite of everything, some students recognize that they feel insecure with this type of tasks and that disorientation and anxiety often appear during the process. To avoid these negative emotions, it is essential to follow guidelines applicable to all research work.
But, where to start? Surely, the first aspect to take into account is the structure of the work. The structure acts as a kind of skeleton, so it is appropriate to raise it well: with a good foundation, the body of work will be much more solid. Although the approach to work is usually a delicate moment, once we have the idea in our heads everything starts to take shape. How many parts does the job have to have? What should each one contain? In this post we will give you some guidelines to raise your research in a rigorous way.
The research work by parties
Depending on the field of study, a research work can have different natures. However, there are a series of fixed sections that all students must take into account:
Cover page. It contains the title, the author’s name, the group, the teacher and the delivery date. The title must be understandable, precise and consistent with the content of the work.
Initial citations The author can choose, if he wishes, the citations he deems appropriate.
Index. Includes all parts of the work. Before starting to write, it is advisable to have an initial index. However, this section will vary as we go forward.
Introduction. It sets out the purpose, scope and limits of the investigation. There is also a brief presentation of the chapters. The methodology can be part of the introduction or have its own section.
Development of the topic. This is the most extensive part, the body of work. It should be organized in chapters, sections and subsections.
Conclusions They must be presented in a clear and orderly manner. You can highlight positive, negative and pending issues.
References consulted. A correct bibliographic citation in the body of the work should refer us to the references grouped in this section. The citations must be unified and conform to a single criterion. Keep in mind that there is no single way to quote (there is, for example, the APA system or the ISO). Whatever it is, you must choose one and follow it throughout the text. The citation is especially important so as not to fall into plagiarism.
Annexes. They contain complementary but necessary information to understand the content of the work. This includes, for example, interviews, surveys or corpus of very extensive statistics.
